All AP students: there is a sample midterm on-line here.
January 7, 2010
Thursday, January 7th
AP1 and AP3: presentations
AP1: saw a triple point
AP3: discussed molecular solids
January 6, 2010
Wednesday, January 6th
AP3 and AP4: finished discussing liquids, including surface tension and soap (how it cleans, how it forms micelles, and how it’s disruption of surface tension is like West Side Story). We also began discussing types of solids.
H8: Went over Graham’s law problems and began discussing real world applications of gas laws
January 5, 2010
Tuesday, January 5th
AP classes: discussed phase diagrams including normal boiling and melting points, boiling at different pressures, critical T and critical point, triple point and the solid liquid line and density.
H8: sample problems (IF, Dalton, PV=nRT) and Graham’s Law. Homework: finish the two Graham’s Law problems that we started in class (see notes).
January 4, 2010
Monday, January 4th
AP4 and AP1: Phases and phase changes, heat v. T, T and phase change, heat and phase change
H8: molar volume of a gas lab (due next Monday: calculate the value of R as defined by your lab data and then calculate the percent error (given that the correct value of R is 0.08206). We then discussed Dalton’s Law, the ideal gas law (PV=nRT) and began discussing Graham’s Law of Effusion and Diffusion.
December 23, 2009
Wednesday, December 23rd
AP1: finished gas law test, went through condensed states activities. Notes are available for the other two AP classes (Dec 22nd)
AP3: started condensed states. none of us were really in the mood, so we didn’t get a lot accomplished, but if you missed class, please do get the small amount of notes you missed.
If you celebrate, Merry Christmas.
Everybody…Happy (and safe) New Year!
December 22, 2009
Tuesday, December 22nd
AP3 and AP4: finished test from yesterday’s shortened classes, then we went through the condensed states activities and discussed why they worked. More information can be found here.
H8: went over IF problems from yesterday ad discussed WHY all of the gas laws work the way that they do.
December 21, 2009
Monday, December 21st
All AP students: I have instructed the sub to have you take the first two pages of the test. We’ll fit in the other page either Tuesday or Wednesday (the first time I see you).
December 18, 2009
Friday, December 12th
AP4 and AP1: reviewed for the test on Monday.
All AP students: I will NOT be in school on Monday.
H8: Pressure and straws (and the failure to drink through a three story straw), Laws and Theories, Kinetic Molecular Theory, Gas laws (Boyle, Gay Lussac, Charles, Foos, Avogadro) and IF problems.
December 17, 2009
Thursday, December 17th
AP1: real life gas stuff (straws, ears, It’s a Wonderful life, snakes on a plane, breathing, Heimlich, wind knocked out, sucking chest wounds, vacuum cleaners, hickeys, hot air balloons and throwing spray paint in the fire.
AP3: reviewed for Monday’s test
